Life in a Leo Episode 2: Melissa Doucette 2017 Power Tumbling World Team Member

Melissa Doucette was a member of the 2017 T&T World Championship Team after one year as a power tumbler. Mel got her start as an artistic gymnast in New Hampshire. She competed in 3 JO National Championships before moving across the country to compete for the Division I, University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. After her Sophomore year, Mel traveled back the East Coast and transferred to the University of Bridgeport where she finished out her collegiate career, scoring some incredible career highs including a 9.9 on floor and a 38.925 in the AA.

Mel continued on with artistic gymnastics after college. She continued to train as a level 10 gymnast and ultimately decided to give it a go as an elite in 2015. She qualified out of compulsories in her first meet, but was not able to get the score she needed in optionals to qualify for Classics. She decided to take a break and see where life took her, but what she found was she was being pulled back into the sport she loves.

Byron, Mel's coach from the University of Bridgeport suggested she try out power tumbling. This was a turning point for Mel. When she started competing, she regained the confidence she needed to excel in the sport. When Mel competed at the Elite Challenge, she came in 5th place, qualifying her to National Championships, where she finished 2nd. She was invited to the selection camp and ended up making the team which placed 4th in Bulgaria this past November.

Congrats to Mel for being such an inspiration! We wish her tremendous success with this upcoming season and can't wait to see where this sport takes her.  If you want to learn more about Mel, you can find her on Instagram, @Mel_Doucette.
